Armed Somali pirates have seized a cargo ship off the coast of Seychelles. The West Indian flagged Rak Afrikana was boarded by armed pirates from two skiffs.

"We seized the ship as it was slowly sailing away in the Indian Ocean," Mohamed Farah, a pirate commander, told Tiziano by phone from Haradheere. Haradheere is a pirate stronghold on the coast north of Mogadishu.

"My friends and the ship are on the way to the town," Farah said.

The type of cargo and nationality of the crew are still unknown.

the European Union naval force patrolling Somali waters said in a report on their website that the hijacked ship looked to have suffered engine problems before it was captured.
