Heavy Fighting in Mogadishu Leaves 22 Dead

Heavy fighting and artillery shelling has killed at least 22 people and injured 55 more in Mogadishu after government troops overran rebel-held positions in the southern Hodan district medics and witnesses reported Saturday.

Ali Muse, the coordinator of an ambulance service in Mogadishu, told Tiziano that his group retrieved 15 bodies and 55 injured people, in a harrowing day for his team.

"Gruesome things have been seen today, and we are still looking for others," he said.

Residents in the north Shibis district say they have collected seven bodies after brief fighting between al-Shabaab and government soldiers.

"We have collected seven died people today," Hassan Maalin, an elder in Shibis, told Tiziano by phone.

Residents in Hodan reported that a coalition of Hizbul Islam and al-Shabaab have lost a key position in Hodan to the government.

Somalia has been without central government since 1991 after clan militias and warlords overthrew the dictatorial regime of Siad Barre, causing 20 years of constant violence.
