Somalian shows no remorse after death penalty is handed down in child rape
A court in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland in northern Somalia has sentenced a 40-year-old man to death for molesting his 3-year-old granddaughter.
The man's wife testified that she saw the young girl bleeding after the attack by Abdiqadir Mohamed, an internally displaced person from Mogadishu.
"I can confirm that I saw Abdiqadir sleeping beside the young girl," Muna Ahmed said in testimony against her husband. "The girl's vagina was severely ruptured, she is traumatized."
At his trial, Abdiqadir admitted that he molested his granddaughter, but said that he did so in order to spite his wife. His statement stunned the court.
"I was morally fine when I did this," he told the judge before sentencing.
Handcuffed, Abdiqadir was led to jail to wait for his execution. The date of his execution has not yet been set.
