Illegal immigrants deported back to Ethiopia
Security forces in the semi-autonomous Puntland of northeast Somalia have detained at least 110 Ethiopian immigrants attempting to cross the sea to Yemen, officials told Tiziano Saturday.
Witnesses in the coastal town of Bossaso say the troops arrested the immigrants after two days of raids.
"We have arrested the illegal immigrants to stop them from taking this dangerous voyage in our region," Abdullahi Nur, a senior Puntland security official, told Tiziano by phone.
"We shall deport them back to their country," Nur said.
Puntland is a hub for Somalis and Ethiopians heading to Yemen or Saudi Arabia in search of a better life. Many immigrants die while trying to cross the Gulf of Aden.
