5 Questions for a Drug Dealer in Mogadishu

Abdinasir Mohamed Guled spends five minutes asking a drug dealer in Mogadishu five questions.

What is your name and where are you from?

My name is Abdullah Sheikh Nor and I come from the middle Shabelle region.

What kinds of drugs do you sell?

I sell different types of drugs such as cocaine, marijuana, heroin, tobacco, and some solvents and inhalants, or glue mostly used by the street children.

Do you use drugs?

No, I don't use the drugs I sell, but I smoke cigarettes and chew khat.

How has the drug trade in Mogadishu changed over the past year?

Actually, since 1991 the drug business has been thriving, though there have been slow periods, but at the moment I am feeling rich in this business since it seems that people like to consume mind-altering substances even though they may cause some health problems. I can say I get new customers every day, I think the cause is because unemployment is getting higher and the people want to ignore the difficulties from the bad economy.

If you could talk to a drug dealer in New York what would you ask him?

If I could talk to a drug dealer in New York I would ask him how he manages to make this illicit trade under an effective government's control? How has your economy changed since you started this business? What are the types of drugs you sell? If you are caught selling drugs what will your punishment be? Would you like your country to lose its government since it's definitely an obstacle to your business? How do you feel about having such an illegitimate job? What is your standard of living?
