Veteran journalist shot dead in Mogadishu

Armed gunmen murdered a well-known, veteran Somali journalist in Mogadishu Tuesday.

Sheikh Nor Abkey was a 60-year-old veteran journalist working for the state-run Radio Mogadishu. Three gunmen approached the journalist and shot him several times in the head in the Wardhigley area in Mogadishu.

"He was killed by Al-Shabaab, he died on the spot where they shot him," said Bashir Khalif, a journalist for Radio Mogadishu.

"Somalia will miss a well-respected journalist who was always ready to die for his country," he said.

Abkey was a senior dramatist who worked with local televisions and radios. He started working as a journalist on 1988 at Somalia's Sona news agency. Abkey is survived by his wife and seven children.
