Suicide bombers from rebel forces drive explosive-laden cars to busy city areas
MOGADISHU, SOMALIA -- The African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia warned Wednesday that rebels were planning to target public places in Somalia with suicide car bombs, after a mosque blast killed 50 people over the weekend.
"We have realistic information that indicates some of the rebels are planning to carry out a series of synchronized suicide attacks and planting IEDs in public places," AU spokesman Major Barigye Bahoku said.
He said explosive-laden cars were prepared to blow up in public places, exhibiting new militants' tactics copied from Iraq.
"The vehicles they prepared include a black Toyota land cruiser in central Mogadishu, driven by a Muhyadin Yusuf, a dark and black Toyota Surf, and a white fuel tanker with AU insignia currently in Elasha Biyaha, a white lorry with AU insignia, two Toyota Carib vehicles within the Bakara market area, two Nissan diesel lorries, a battlewagon, "Technical", and a van," he said.
No comments were available from Somali rebels on the AU claim.
Somalia has been without central government since 1991, when clan militias and warlords toppled the dictatorial regime of Siad Barre and plunged the nation into violence and anarchy for the past 20 years.
