Pakistani Boat Bound for Somalia Burns

A raging fire engulfed a Pakistani boat carrying goods to northern Somalia and burned the vessel down to the waterline, officials told Tiziano by phone.

According to Mohamed Said, an official at Bossaso port, the vessel traveling from Dubai to Puntland burned down near Yemen. The 13 crew members on-board were rescued by the Yemeni Coast Guard.

"The boat burned down near the Yemeni island of Socotra after the fire spread quickly," Said described.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but reports say it was caused by engine trouble.

Somalia has no coast guard. Ships traveling to Somalia are vulnerable to pirates and equipment malfunctions at sea.

Somalia has been without government since 1991, after dictator Mohamed Siad Barre was ousted from power by clan militias and the country was plunged into a constant state of civil war.
