Five residents injured in the battle with the apes

Hundreds of monkeys converged on a Somaliland town triggering an hours-long battle between besieged residents the attacking apes that left five residents injured.

Some 200 monkeys that residents described as "thirsty" stormed the town of Burao and invaded people's homes searching for water, occupying a five-block area of the town while residents locked themselves in their homes.

"It was supernatural, they entered here forcibly and controlled the town," Abdullahi Nor, a resident of Burao, told Tiziano by phone. "They injured people, drank water from homes, and then left."

Disturbed residents who witnessed the incident say the monkeys climbed over the roofs of houses, threw stones, injured people and then occupied the streets before eventually returning to the bush after several hours.

"The roofs of our houses were shaking because of so many monkeys," Nor said.

Somaliland is a semi-autonomous region in the north of Somalia that has enjoyed relative peace and stability compared to other parts of the country since 1991.
