Massive Demonstration Against Al-Shabaab in Mogadishu

Hundreds of anti-Al-Shabaab demonstrators took to the streets of Mogadishu Monday, after the militants destroyed the graves of revered clerics.

Police fired bullets into the air to try and suppress the demonstration as marchers moved from Hamarweyne to the Wardhiigley district, loudly shouting and displaying slogans such as "Down with Al-Shabaab."

Locals said it was the biggest ever demonstration against Al-Shabaab, with at least 1,000 people taking part, although organizers put the figure closer to 2,000.

"We are desperate and want peace and fighting against Al-Shabaab now," another poster read.

Al-Shabaab has imposed a strict interpretation of Sharia law that is oppressive to Somalis who follow moderate Sufi law.
