5 Questions for a Musician in Iraqi Kurdistan

Tiziano Reporter, Shivan Sito, asks a local musician in Erbil, Iraq five questions about what he does.

When did you start playing music?

I was interested in music since my childhood and I liked it a lot. I first started with flute instrument. My father was playing it, and I learned from him, I can say that he was source of my inspiration and a great instructor. I started learning Saz in 1997, I learned that by teaching myself but I also tried to learn from other musicians. At that time I had an instrument which helped me to work and train Saz. Hopefully, now I'm able to play many instruments like Saz, Balaban, Flute, lute and Violin. However, I am not professional at all of the mentioned instruments; I just play some of them for fun.

What do you feel when you play music?

When I play music I have a good sensation, I go to another world, I cannot feel my existence, and imagination takes me away. Every musician should play with sensitivity because music is very sacred.

What do you do now?

Now I have a shop where I repair many kinds of music instruments. About seven years ago, I used to make some instruments like Saz and Lute. But now I cannot do that because I am busy with other work. We also offer music courses of all instruments. I taught many people and now some of them are professionals working in music studios.

What's your advice for who likes to learn how to play music?

Anyone who likes to learn how to play music he should be very sensitive with music. He must learn from an instructor; otherwise he may learn it wrongly.

What is the influence music made in your life?

In my viewpoint, everyone who plays music instrument becomes two persons. Music is very sacred to me, if you don't go into music world you cannot imagine or feel it.
